BOULDER, Colo. (May 8, 2023) – Cozy Coats for Kids® is thrilled to announce that it has received its largest single cash donation to date from its founder, businessman Nick Gromicko. On behalf of himself and his wife, Lena, Gromicko has donated $100,000 to the registered charity to help fund its annual free winter coat giveaway to benefit children in need across the U.S. and Canada.

Asked what motivated his donation, Gromicko spoke from his home in Frederick, Colo., where he resides with his wife and three children. “It’s the only charity I know of that has no overhead. Everyone who works for it is a volunteer, and every dollar donated goes straight to the children. If I hadn’t founded Cozy Coats for Kids, Lena and I would have made the donation anyway.”

Executive Director Maggie Aey expressed her “happy shock” at the surprise gesture. “I had no idea this was coming,” she said. Aey, who draws no salary for her role as head of the organization, said that 100% of the funds will go toward the purchase of brand-new winter coats for children in need who are identified by home inspectors – who fund the organization year ‘round – in their local communities across the U.S. and Canada.

Founded in 1996 and converted to a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in 2018, CCFK has as its mission to empower children and keep them healthy. Their annual new coat giveaway entails identifying specific children in need so that the coat purchased for them is not only in their correct size, but also in their preferred color and style. This added psychological boost of having their preferences recognized is as important as the coat is in keeping them warm.

Aey said that this unexpected windfall may lead to an expanded giveaway program or similar endeavor. “We have a lot of details to work out with this incredible donation,” she said. “It’s certainly a good problem to have!”
